Your Ability To Influence

People will listen to you if you portray credibility. Credibility comes from a good understanding of the problem from different perspectives and experience in solving such problems previously.

To establish credibility leaders need to spend time with their stake holders to understand the difficulties others are facing. As engineering leaders we need to understand pros and cons of various design decisions and thereby guide team to make solid engineering choices.

Influence also comes via trust, trust is established by listening to folks, giving them time and providing help when needed. A team member who trusts you will work harder to deliver something you ask of them versus when trust lacks.

Trust and influence have to be exercised both up and down, leaders need to work on gaining trust of engineers working in their teams and in working with senior leaders to build trust and influence.

Generally, folks will notice your passion and desire to produce high quality work in good time. And thus, your credibility will provide you leverage in influencing others.
